EMS 246 OB/Pediatrics


Prerequisite: Successful completion of EMS 241, EMS 242, EMS 243, and EMS 244 with a grade of “C” or better. Current/active National or State License as a EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate.
4 lecture hours, 2 lab hours: 5 credit hours
This 5-credit hour course introduces the student to the care and treatment of the obstetrical patient to include a review of the anatomy and physiology of the female patient, complications of pregnancy, normal delivery, APGAR, and care of the neonate. The pediatric population care and treatment will include life span development and discussion of medical and traumatic conditions that affect the pediatric patient. Cognitive, psychomotor and affective learning is used during this course. Emergency Department and Fast Track clinical rotations continue. Labor and Delivery and Special Care nursery clinical rotations will be introduced. Care of the pediatric patient will be stressed in the Emergency Department. Special populations including geriatric and home health patients will be discussed. Field Provisional calls will continue.
