EMS 242 Respiratory

Prerequisite: Current/active National or State License as an EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate and acceptance into Paramedic Program.
2 lecture hours, 2 lab hours: 3 credit hours
This 3-credit hour course introduces the student to the psychological effects and clinical use of pharmacological agents utilized in pre-hospital emergency medicine. Medications that are used primarily in emergency situations will be stressed. Circulatory access, medication administration and advanced resuscitation methodologies are introduced. Advanced airway management is thoroughly explored and correlated to knowledge acquired during the human systems and pathophysiology classes. This class provides instruction in both basic and advanced airway management techniques. Emphasis is placed on proper ventilation and cellular respiration as a basis for continued life. Observational calls in a prehospital setting is continued. Clinical rotations in Respiratory Therapy and Emergency Department Fast Track are introduced. Cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning is used during this course.
